Get knitting for Cystic Fibrosis Trust Free Knitted Leg Warmer Pattern

Hand Knitted Heather Leg Warmer Knitting Pattern

I was recently approached by Supertramp Ltd  who asked me to design a free knitted leg warmer pattern.

This pattern is  for a fundraising event launched this week –  ‘Get knitting for Cystic Fibrosis Trust’.   Knitters can take up their needles and knit leg warmers to help to raise funds for Cystic Fibrosis (CF) Trust! what a fantastic idea!  The knitted leg warmers will be used for trampolinists.  Knitted leg warmers are great for garden trampolinists as they help keep their ankles warm in the cooler months. They can’t be made of man made fibres because they can create too much static when bouncing.

I chose a chunky yarn and a pattern suitable for knitters of any experience.  You don’t have to use the yarn specified, any chunky weight yarn will work just as well.  The leg warmers only use 150g of chunky yarn and knit up very quickly (I completed one pair in only one evening!).  The pattern is already very popular and  has had over 700 downloads since I first published the pattern on my website in October 2012.  You can download the free knitted leg warmer pattern by clicking on the box below, or via my ravelry pattern store for FREE!

I have now included a DK version of this pattern on the download for those of you who requested a DK pattern to knit leg warmers from your yarn stash.

Please contact Supertramp directly if you require a paper version sending via post.

The Cystic Fibrosis Trust is the UK’s only national charity dealing with all aspects of CF. Each week five babies are born with CF and two young lives are lost.

Since 1964, it has supported excellence in research and clinical care, as well as providing practical support and advice to people and their families.

I hope that all you fab knitting enthusiasts will pick up your needles and knit up some of these leg warmers using my free pattern to raise funds for Get knitting for Cystic Fibrosis Trust, such an important charity :-)  It would be great if you could spread the word to your local knitting groups and knitting shops and get them involved too!

Once the legwarmers are knitted you should send them back to Supertramp at Super Tramp Ltd, South View Estate, Willand, Cullompton, Devon, EX15 2QW by July 30, 2013, so they can get them ready to sell in the run up to Christmas with all proceeds going to the CF Trust, Supertramp’s Charity of the Year.

  1. Wow! What an amazing thing to do for such a great cause!

I only wish I could knit so I could make some too!

  2. I’ve bought my wool and can’t wait to get knitting for such a great charity, thank you so much for the pattern.

  3. What a great idea and thank you so much for the pattern. I am very keen to get involved but I just wondered whether there was a tension measurement? Thanks!

    • Hi Mary,
I have purposefully not added a tension measurement on the pattern as the yarn used is optional. I would say to stay near to the tension stated on the ball band of your chosen yarn. If you knit loosely go down a needle sizes, or if you knit tightly, go up a needle size. As the leg warmers are a basic rib pattern with no shaping so the tension is not important providing you are knitting both legs using same yarn and needle size! hope this helps, kind regards, Becky

  4. Hi
Could you tell me waht the desired lengths would be for each size 36 (extra small/child) 40 (small) 46 (medium) 50 (large) sts. Thank you x

    • It depends what type of yarn you use, the best thing to do is try a tension square for the yarn you are using and go from there.

I have knitted one pair of leggings but I’ve no idea what a mattress stitch is, please could you enlighten me, Thank you.

    • Mattress stitch is just a neat form of finishing off a knitted garment. If preferred you could just stitch up as you usually do so as it is not strictly necessary to use this form of stitching. There are lots of videos on youtube explaining mattress stitch if you are still stuck. Hope this helps.

  6. Susan perry(woollywonders knitting group) says:

Hi a number of ladies in our group are going to knit for you just printing of your pattern for them so they can start

  7. lovely idea. Tried to download the pattern unsuccessfully!

    • I have checked the download, and it is working properly, the only thought it could be is the settings on your computer for downloads? Hope you have managed to solve the problem. Thousands of people have managed to download successfully, have another go, or email me direct at twigsknits and I will email you a copy.

  8. Lesley croll says:

My daughter Aimee (12) and I are going to start straight away and do as many as we can with the spare wool we have. Fab idea x

  9. Our knitting group would like to help knitting the leg warmers but find the wool a little expensive, if we made them from other mixed fibres would they still be used for other sports rather than trampolines

    • Hi Susan, you are welcome to use the pattern to raise money for any charity. I’m not sure about whether other sports would used them, acrylic yarns can cause static which is why they are not suitable for trampolines. I’m sorry I’m not able to help further. I hope you enjoy knitting some leg warmers though x
